Why Steam Rises From The Ground In New York Movie Scenes

Movies set in New York City always seem to have steam seeping up through manhole covers. Turns out, there's a reason that trope exists: New York City is home to the largest steam system in the world! I've lived here my whole life and never knew why steam rises from the ground, or what those orange and white cylinders that pop up around the city are, until researching this video! Some popular locations in New York City powered by steam: the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, and Lincoln Center A note on the sound here: I didn't realise it until I got home, but my microphone clip fell off my shirt before I started recording. I've done my best to repair it, and added manuel subtitles to help with understanding!
